The Galveston Port Society Records contains printed materials that chronicle the administration and outreach of the Galveston Port Society, the Galveston Seamen's Home, and the Seamen's Benevolent and Life Boat Association of Galveston. The materials are grouped under three manuscript numbers: 36-1205, 36-1206, and 36-1207. 36-1205 is a record book which contains the Constitution of the Galveston Port Society, the Charter, Constitution, and By-Laws of the Galveston Seamen's Home, meeting minutes, lists of subscribers, and various newspaper clippings. 36-1206 is an account book which lists expenditures and transactions from the Society, as well as treasurer's statements. 36-1207 contains pamphlets of the Constitutions, Charters, and By-Laws of the Galveston Seamen's Home and the Seamen's Benevolent and Life Boat Association of Galveston, account books of dues paid, and an account statement from the National Bank of Texas for the Galveston Seamen's Home. These materials give evidence of efforts in Galveston's early years to promote and develop the Port by improving the working and living conditions of sailors who came through, playing no small part in the commercial and social success of the Port throughout the mid to late 1800's onward. 20210525.
