A letter dated October 31, 1944 from U.S. Army Captain William John Priestley to Mrs. Clare Boothe Luce of Connecticut. In the letter, Capt. Priestley discusses his life at Japanese War Prison Camp #3 in the Philippines and Mrs. Luce's visit to the capital Manila before World War II. Accompanying the letter are two typed statements from another prisoner of war, Galveston-based surgeon Dr. Albert N. Sarwold. The statements provide additional information about Capt. Priestley's letter, such as its meaning and origin, the relationship between the Captain and Dr. Sarwold, and also the relationship between the Captain and Mrs. Luce. 20210525. English. The letter originally accompanied a collection of confidential records Captain Priestley entrusted to Dr. Sarwold and is believed to be a "decoy" in case of confiscation by the Japanese. Dr. Sarwold brought the original letter and records to the U.S. in 1945. He then contacted Mrs. Luce by telephone, but the FBI or Army Secret Service (Dr. Sarwold is unsure exactly who, according to one of the statements) came to pick up the material shortly after that phone call. Mrs. Luce later sent Dr. Sarwold a typed copy of Capt. Priestley's letter. On November 25, 1969, Dr. Sarwold donated that typed copy to the Rosenberg Library.
