The John Grant Tod papers consist of correspondence, receipts, business records, newspaper clippings, and maps collected or created by John Grant Tod that date from circa 1826 to 1876. These papers include materials relating to the Texas Navy, the Mexican-American War, railroads, the Civil War, Gail Borden and food processing. There are scant records of Tod's service in the United States Navy and no records of his service in the Mexican Navy in this collection. There are many papers documenting his service in the Republic of Texas Navy, however. These papers provide a clear view of defense contracting at the time, including correspondence both with suppliers and with Republic of Texas officials overseeing naval development. Later papers document supply provision during the Mexican-American Warm, reports of events along the Texas-Mexico border and the United States invasion of Mexico, and Tod's effort to supply the Confederate Army with beef during the Civil War. 20210525.
