<subfield code="a">The Voices of the Descendants is a compilation of stories primarily told by the descendants of those who experienced The 1900 Storm. That hurricane which truck the Texas Coast on the 8th of September to this day represents the deadliest natural disaster in United States history. Moreover, adjusted for inflation, that Storm also ranks as the third most costly natural disaster in our Nation<U+2019>s history. The Voices of the Descendants not only tells the stories of courage, resilience, fortitude, and life saving decision making, but also of tragic mistakes that if avoided could have resulted in less mortality. The Voices will give the reader a view into a past rich in history and take the reader into a world that was more leisurely and simple. It was a world where propriety and manners were essential and where architectural majesty lined the city streets. Nonetheless, it also was an era very limited in technological achievement and scientific knowledge. With this backdrop, it is easy see how The Storm struck completely without warning. As a matter of fact, a good number of residents had even flocked to the beach early that Saturday morning to see the magnificent show that the Gulf waves were putting on.</subfield>
