"Grace Spaulding John (1890-1972) was known for her vibrant landscapes, portraits, and still life paintings. She was encouraged to pursue art at an early age and studied at the St. Louis School of Fine Art; the Chicago Institute; the Arts Students League in New York; the Parsons School of Design; and the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art. Her renderings of the city of Houston were highly sought after as were her scenes from Europe and Mexico. Though based in Houston, John kept studios at various times in San Francisco, New York, and Roanoke, VA.".
