The Kempners needed a home after the Great Fire of 1885 burned their residence at 18th and Postoffice. Wells committed suicide due to his failing bank (1887?). Kempner played an important role in raising funds to reopen the bank thus saving the fortunes of many. The house was renowned for its ""widow's walk,"" 12 fireplaces and numerous stained glass windows. The building later served as the Phi Beta Pi fraternity house until it was torn down in 1951 (?)
