The Red Cross experienced phenomenal growth during WWI. IN 1914, there were 107 local chapters; by 1918, there were 3,864. Nationwide membership grew from 17,000 to 20 million in just four years, and the public contributed [dollar sign]400 million to the American and Allied cause. The organization again came together during WWII, supplying 104,000 military nurses, 300,000 tons of supplies, and 13.3 million pints of blood to wounded soldiers and civilians.".</subfield>
