"From set of twelve designs, lettered A-Q, for the Rosenberg Fountains. CONSERVED BY ST. MARK FINE ARTS, SEP. 2014". PERMANENT COLLECTION. 20150918. "The Rosenberg Fountains: Henry Rosenberg, successful businessman and philanthropist, bequeathed to his adopted city of Galveston [dollar sign]30,000 for the erection of public drinking fountains. Sculptor John Massey Rhind of New York was selected to design and construct the Rosenberg Fountains. His twelve watercolor renderings served as templates for the seventeen fountains that are known to have been built. Completed in 1898, these fountains were made of gray granite with bronze ornamentation for the water inlets. Other features included basins for both people and animals. Over the years, most of the fountains were dismantled or destroyed and used as concrete. Only five had survived intact by 1994. Since then, four more have been found, restored, and moved to different locations. Each fountain bears the inscription, ""Gift of Henry Rosenberg."" Fountain Design F Design F is a smaller fountain that has been on or near the water since its construction in 1898. The front displays a horse trough with ornamental plaques and carvings. At each end of the trough are dog basins. The back of the fountain has a basin that once served people from a bronze fish-shaped faucet. It originally stood near the Beach Hotel at 21st Street until the hotel burned down in the fall of 1898. Since the 1900 Storm, this site has been under water, and the fountain has been relocated several times. It appears in an undated photograph of the Klondyke Saloon, which is believed to have been located near 29th and Water Street (Harborside). A 1918 photograph shows the fountain in front of a building with a sign labeled ""Barney's,"" but the location is unknown. The current location of Fountain F is the intersection of 21st Street and Seawall Boulevard.". "Rhind, John Massey".
