Scots sculptor, born Edinburgh. Member Rioyal Scottish Academy, National Sculpture Society, National Arts Club, New York. Lived and worked in New York for a period and executed work in almost all of the states. This included a large equestrian statue of George Washington. THe will of Henry Rosenberg provided [dollar sign]30,000. ""for the erection of not less than ten drinking fountains for man and beast in various portions of the city of Galveston "" 17 fountains were erected. 12 placed in March 1898, one in each of the 12 wards of the city. Five larger fountains were placed in October 1898, Sherman Park, Central Park, Morris and Lasker Parks, the two others wereplaced in large open public spaces, one near the Union Railway Station and the other on 20th St. a block north of the Old City Hall. THe fountains were designed by J. Massey Rhind, of New York. The material is light gray granite ornamented with bronze. Each fountains bears the inscription ""GIft of Henry Rosenberg"". P. 123 Henry Rosenberg Commemorating his Gifts to Galveston The Rosenberg Fountains: Henry Rosenberg, successful businessman and philanthropist, bequeathed to his adopted city of Galveston [dollar sign]30,000 for the erection of public drinking fountains. Sculptor John Massey Rhind of New York was selected to design and construct the Rosenberg Fountains. His twelve watercolor renderings served as templates for the seventeen fountains that are known to have been built. Completed in 1898, these fountains were made of gray granite with bronze ornamentation for the water inlets. Other features included basins for both people and animals. Over the years, most of the fountains were dismantled or destroyed and used as concrete. Only five had survived intact by 1994. Since then, four more have been found, restored, and moved to different locations. Each fountain bears the inscription, ""Gift of Henry Rosenberg."" Fountain Design B Design B was a dome structure held up by six columns covering the drinking basin placed in the center. This fountain was intended for use by people only, and it did not have separate basins for animals. The park where it stood was located between 10th Street and 11th Street from Avenue G (Winnie) to Avenue H (Ball). Fountain B was with the park when the park moved to the site of the old Rosenberg School, and the new Rosenberg School was built on the site of the old park. It now stands close to the corner of 12th Street and Avenue H (Ball).".
