"Part of January 2007 Treasure of the Month One of the best-known manufacturers of American art pottery, Rookwood Pottery was founded in 1880 by Maria Longworth Nichols, a wealthy socialite and artist in Cincinnati Ohio. The factory produced many award-winning designs and gained international acclaim when it won a gold medal at the 1899 Paris Exhibition. Rookwood designs evolved from ornate Victorian to more modern Art Nouveau and Art Deco. WWII caused a decline in the number and quality of artists at the plant, and it closed in the 1960s.".
