"Hughson Hawley (1850-1936) was one the most recognized architectural illustrators in America. He was active from 1880 until 1931. Though based in New York for most of his life, he was born and died in England. See file under artist's name in Curator's office. Conservation work done in 2007 by St Marks Hughson Hawley was a self-taught watercolorist, theater-set designer and specialist in painting cathedral interiors. He was born in Brighton, England, and began his career by painting sets for the Theatre Royal in his hometown and, later, for the theater at Stratford-on-Avon, where his father was the town librarian. At the same time, he started sketching the countryside around London and became especially adept at drawing architecture. After moving to New York City in 1879 at the invitation of the American producer James Steele MacKenzie, Hawley became a leading designer in America of theater backdrops. He maintained a studio in New York for fifty years, creating architectural renderings, working for such noted firms as McKim Mead & White, York & Sawyer, and Cass Gilbert, as well as producing illustrations for Harper's Magazine and other publications. Hawley painted scenery for Covent Garden in London during the 1870s. In 1879 he came to New York City to continued scene painting for Madison Square Theater. He had a home in Englewood, NJ and a studio in New York City for more than 50 years He specialized architectural renders and paintings of cathedral interiors and city scapes. While in San Francisco he did a watercolor of the Crocker mansion. He was a resident of New Rochelle, NY at the time of his death on May 11, 1936. Member: NY Sketch Club.
