Sharpe must do battle with a gang of deserters who have taken hostages, including Isabella, the wife of Sir Augustus Farthingdale, the English Colonel. Sharpe is sent with the ransom money. All is not what it seems, for the leader of the desperados is none other than Sergeant Hakeswill, an evil villain from Sharpe's past. Hakeswill tricks Sharpe and insists that the ransom be doubled. Sharpe leads an attack to free Isabella and destroy the force of deserters who Wellington fears pose a threat to the discipline of his men.
